The 4th ESSIB took place 3.-7. July 2023 at the University of Hamburg with the topic "Functional metagenomics: from nature to biochemical functions". The summer school consisted of theory talks by 14 lecturers from Germany, Spain, and UK, two lab courses offered by the local organizer, and an excursion to DESY/X-FEL.
